CHILDHOOD
"xxx" ________________ Nathan was born into a relatively poor and complicated family consisting of his biological mother and stepfather. Together they had a son, Ethan, with whom Nathan shares a mother. His stepfather left shortly after their younger sister was born, which affected the family greatly. Their mother suffered from a systematic autoimmune disease called lupus and was unable to get treatment due to their economic challenges. His half-brother Ethan took on a great deal of responsibility and worked various jobs in order for his mother to be able to get the treatment she very well deserved. Nathan on the other hand was still processing the fact that his biological father had been absent, and the stepfather left them. He felt abandoned, hurt and alone and therefore isolated himself from the family. Nathan let his feelings consume him rather than talking about them and processing them. This incapability of handling his emotions had major consequences for his involvement in the course of his mother’s disease. He could not bear the thought of losing his mother, so it was easier for him to distance himself by moving out. Instead, he moved in with his biological father, who was absent anyway. His way of ‘caring’ for Nathan was by granting him money, which worked out in his favor. This way, no one could hold him accountable for his cowardly decisions. Moving out and leaving both his half-brother and beloved mother was the biggest mistake of his life. The fact that Nathan moved out while their mother was extremely sick affected their brotherly relationship significantly. Ethan was furious and mostly disappointed in Nathan’s decisions and his way of living. While Nathan was out seemingly enjoying life, Ethan worked his ass off to provide for their sister and mother. The contradictory way of living awoke a feeling of envy within Ethan. Nathan had it easy compared to Ethan. On the other hand, Nathan hated himself for leaving and envied his half-brother for being able to take responsibility and act upon his feelings. Therefore, to this day, their relationship is complicated with an unresolved conflict and deep envy of one another for entirely different reasons. |
